Praying for Boldness
“And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
Acts of the Apostles 4:29-31 NLT
Peter and John are released from prison and immediately return to the other believers. After giving their report to the believers, they hold a prayer meeting. What do you ask God for when you have been arrested and threatened?
Most of us would pray for God to give us safety and make our lives full of peace. I know this because this prayer is what most Christians pray today. We want to be blessed by God so we can be healthy, wealthy, and skinny.
But these New Testament believers did not ask for comfort or success. They asked God for boldness. They prayed for God's boldness to continue to preach the gospel despite opposition.
We need people willing to pray for boldness. Boldness to take a stand for righteousness when everyone else is compromising. Boldness to speak the truth with love. Boldness to love the sinner but hate the sin. Boldness to declare there is such a thing as sin.
Boldness doesn’t mean everyone will agree with us or like us. Boldness means we will be tested and sometimes rejected. But it also means we put ourselves in a position where God can work in us and through us.
God, make me bold!
Holy Spirit, I want boldness in my life. Forgive me for compromise and desiring to be comfortable. Fill me with a spirit of boldness. Help me to believe for greater things.
