The Power of Unity

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.

Acts of the Apostles 4:32-37 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

There is amazing power in unity!

In the Old Testament, we can read the story of the people who decided to build a tower to heaven. They started the project, and God struck them with the judgment of being unable to communicate with each other. The project failed the communication issues divided them.

The same thing happens today. People stop talking to each other, and division sets in and steals the church’s power. Instead of being a life-transforming community, it becomes a bed of gossip, jealously, selfishness, and division.

When we allow the Holy Spirit to fill and direct our lives, there is a new sense of unity because God’s presence living in us sanctifies our flesh. We become generous to share with each other.

I do not believe in socialism or communism. I do not believe that is what the early church practiced. I believe people were simply generous and shared what they had with each other. I don’t believe they put everything in one pot, and then the apostles divided it up to everyone. People still owned their homes and businesses—they just used their excess to assist those in need.

One man was so generous that he was given a nickname, “Son of Encouragement.” I believe we should all strive to be known as an encourager. We should be the person who is constantly encouraging others with our words and giving. The Holy Spirit can make us all encouragers.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I invite You to fill me and take total charge of my life. I ask You to teach me how to think and act. Teach me how to be an encourager to others with my words and deeds.
