A Long-standing Problem
But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”
Acts of the Apostles 6:1-4 NLT
It is interesting to me that in the middle of a tremendous outpouring of the Spirit, there comes a division within the people. Some felt there was discrimination in the Church.
The apostles responded to the problem by calling a meeting and developing a plan. The plan involved getting seven men to organize the distribution of food fairly. The people liked the idea, and the Church continued to grow.
Even people full of the Holy Spirit can have divisive opinions. This is why we need leadership in tune with the Holy Spirit and can bring wisdom to resolve conflicts.
It was also interesting that the first problem in the church was discrimination based on someone’s ethnicity. Our country today is struggling so much with this issue. It is time for the Church to model unity, acceptance, and equality. There should be no ethnic barriers in the body of Christ.
Holy Spirit, please help me to be a part of the solution to problems and not the problem. Help me to see people the way You do.
