Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere — in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts of the Apostles 1:4-8 NLT
What happens after Easter?
Jesus has died on the cross and risen from the dead. His followers are ready to overthrow the Romans and set up an earthly kingdom. But Jesus is still thinking in spiritual terms of transformation, not in a physical kingdom.
The power His followers need is not an army but the Holy Spirit. Jesus knows what is ahead—persecution. He knows the only way His followers will overcome the struggles awaiting them is for them to have a fresh infilling of the Spirit. This baptism of the Spirit will be the catalyst to propel the message of His resurrection across the known world. But it will come at a price.
Jesus gave His followers one command—wait in Jerusalem until you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. He knew they must have the empowerment of Spirit baptism before they attempt to share the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection.
We are no different. We must have a fresh infilling of the Spirit in our lives. We can never lean on human gifting, intelligence, or personality. We must rely on the fullness of the Spirit in our lives.
I believe the baptism of the Spirit is available today to anyone willing to wait before God for that gift. Spirit baptism does not change my relationship with God. I am saved by my faith in the bloodshed on the cross. Spirit baptism is an empowerment to live out the life of freedom and to share that with others.
Holy Spirit, I want a fresh infilling in my life today. I want to experience everything You have for me. I want to walk daily in the fullness of the Spirit.
