Choosing to Listen

November 3, 2020

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

Galatians 3:26-29 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Identity opens the door for intimacy. Intimacy opens the door for faith. If we want to have more faith, we must understand who we are.

When we become followers of Jesus Christ through faith, we become children of God. The Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us and begins the process of rerouting our desires and priorities. As we learn to listen and respond to the Holy Spirit, we develop greater intimacy with our Father God. This intimacy allows us to begin to see life from God’s perspective thus releasing faith inside of us.

The problem many of us have is learning to listen to the Holy Spirit. There are so many voices trying to speak to us and give us direction.

I have two apps on my phone that give me directions. They are Waze and Google Maps. There have been moments when I had both apps on at the same time, and they are giving me conflicting directions. (Usually, it is because Waze has information that Google doesn’t have.)

I have learned that to get clear directions, I have to turn off one app. I must make a choice to listen only to one app. Trying to listen to two apps only brings confusion and frustration into my life.

We must learn to turn off the voice of our world and our flesh. We must soak ourselves in the Word of God so that we can hear the Spirit of God. When we begin to hear the Spirit of God, we discover a whole new way of living that is built on faith in Who God is and who we are as children of God.

Do you realize that as a child of God all the promises that God made to Abraham are available to you? That’s right. We can choose to listen to God’s voice and begin to live by faith in His promises.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, please teach me how to hear your voice. Give me the courage to turn off other voices and focus on Your truth. Help me to accept who You have created me to be. Help me to live by faith in Your promises.
