Defining Love

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

How do you define love? Often, in our culture, love is viewed as a feeling. In the Bible, love is viewed more as an attitude that leads to action. Biblical love demands action. You must do something to show your love.

Paul gives us the most exhaustive definition of the attitude of love in our passage today. He tells us love is patient, kind, not jealous, not boastful, not proud, or rude. His list continues by telling us love is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance.

Note that this passage falls between two sections of Paul’s letter dealing with spiritual gifts. He is writing about the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in our lives and pauses to write this entire section on love. Why give such a large space of scripture to talk about love in the middle of talking about spiritual empowerment?

I believe there is a connection between the effectiveness of our spiritual empowerment and our ability to manifest God’s love. If we are proud, we will use our spiritual gifts to promote ourselves and be rude to others. Without love to temper our spiritual gifts, we will be a horrible reflection of Jesus.

I believe our desire should always be to seek to love as Jesus loved; seek that our motivation will always be love. The Holy Spirit can then trust us with fresh spiritual empowerment because He will know they are safe to operate through us.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, please help me to be motivated by love. Help me to acknowledge my areas of weakness and allow You to work on me.
