Everlasting Father

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

Isaiah 9:6-7 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Jesus was given the title, “Everlasting Father.” That seems to be an interesting title—perhaps not as dramatic as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, or Prince of Peace.

In our culture, we struggle with a good definition of a father. Many people grew up with absent fathers due to their work schedules or just abandonment. Others grew up with abusive fathers. The picture of a loving father is hard for many to conceive.

Perhaps that is why some see Jesus as the big Santa Claus in the sky. That is a clearer picture than a father. Which is strange since Santa Claus isn’t real—but for many, a loving father isn’t real either.

A true father is one who always loves. He is always there to give support, encouragement, and strength. He is one who also is strong enough to give correction when we are wrong. There is always a tension between encouragement and correction. Most of us fathers are never certain we managed that tension right.

But Jesus gives us the perfect balance between always loving us and still correcting us when we need correcting. He doesn’t change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His love never fades. His desire to see us succeed never changes. His love for us includes His correction.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I am thankful that You are my Everlasting Father. You always love me, and You are always working to help me grow and develop. Thanks for continuing to work on me.
