Obedience to God's Word

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”

Joshua 1:7-8 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous. This strength and courage are going to come through obedience to the Word of God. But the Word of God that Joshua had was not a book of Psalms, Proverbs, and a New Testament. Joshua only had scrolls containing the Ten Commandments, instructions for the Tabernacle and ceremonial worship, and the information in our first five books of the Bible.

Joshua isn't being asked to have the kind for quiet time that involves a super-spiritualized reading of a 'comfortable' psalm or proverb each day. He is being asked to relentlessly engage with the commandments and guidelines that will help him build a society on values and principles that reveal God's righteousness and create a just society.

Perhaps, we too often use our Bible reading time to engage with the parts of the Bible that are nice and encouraging. We like to read about the miracles of Jesus, the Psalms of worship, and the wisdom of Proverbs. But how often do we dive into the Ten Commandments or even contemplate the hard instructions of Paul to believers about living a holy life?

It is good to remind ourselves we serve a miracle-working God. But we should also be reminding ourselves that we serve a holy God, and He expects us to be holy even as He is holy.

True courage and strength come from knowing we are living in harmony with Almighty God. When we make the right choices with our lives, we can trust God to work in and through us.

I’m not saying we are without fault and perfect. That is impossible because of our fallen nature. But let’s not use our sinful nature as an excuse to feed our flesh, become spiritually lazy, or make selfish choices.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I need Your help to work toward holiness in my life. I want to live to please God. Help me to see the areas in my life that need adjustment and correction. Empower me to make the right choices daily.
