I Am Not Alone

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Let’s drill down a moment on the issues of fear and discouragement. God tells Joshua at least three times to be strong and courageous. He accompanies that command with a promise that He would be with Joshua just as He was with Moses. God’s presence would be the source of Joshua’s strength and courage.

Then God tells him not to be afraid or discouraged. While they look similar, these are very different emotions. Being afraid is most often caused by something unexpected happening. Terror strikes when a storm suddenly hits us. It may be a sudden loss of a job, a sickness, a loss of a loved one, a failure, and an attack by someone else. Suddenly, we find life out-of-control.

We read about such a time in the gospel of Mark, chapter four. Jesus is on the Sea of Galilee with his disciples when a storm comes up. Jesus is asleep in the storm while the disciples are in full-on panic mode. They are afraid that they are about to drown. Jesus wakes up and simply speaks to the storm and commands it to stop. His presence with them in the storm removes the fear.

Discouragement is different. It is often the accumulation of events that seems to keep piling on. We could handle a disappointment or loss—but it seems like we are attacked in our finances, health, relationships, and everything else all at once. We are physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted. There is no joy, and little faith left. What do we do?

This is where we learn to come to Jesus and accept His rest. He invites us with these words, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

God promised Joshua he would not be alone when he felt afraid or discouraged. That same promise is for us today. The Holy Spirit is here with us right now. He wants us to come to Him and receive His rest.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I ask You now for rest and renewal of my spirit, soul, and body. Today, I receive Your presence. I fall into Your arms of protection and strength.
