Step Into The Water
The Lord told Joshua, “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses. Give this command to the priests who carry the Ark of the Covenant: ‘When you reach the banks of the Jordan River, take a few steps into the river and stop there.’”
Joshua 3:7-8 NLT
God is about to show off and show out for Joshua and the children of Israel. Some forty years earlier, God divided the Red Sea as a miraculous deliverance from Egypt and Pharaoh under Moses’ leadership. Now He is going to show that He is still the God of miracles as He works through Joshua and the priests in a totally different approach.
Moses just held up the staff of God, and the waters parted. This time God gives a different instruction. The priests are to actually walk into the water while carrying the Ark of the Covenant.
Scholars tell us the Jordan River would have been at flood stage at this time of the year. It would have been very wide and had a swift current. Walking into such a river could be life-threatening. I wonder how they chose which priests got to go first into the water.
They took those first steps totally acting in faith. There was no physical sign to indicate the miracle that was about to happen.
There are those times when we must do what we can do before God will do what we can’t do. There is sometimes a thin line between faith and foolishness. Some people want something so much they think they are acting in faith to borrow the money to get it or try some other means that amounts to manipulation.
We must always check to be sure that our faith is based on God’s promises and His direction in our lives. We can’t allow our ego or fleshly desires to get in the way and cause us to walk in foolishness.
I have discovered in my walk of faith that I am often required to act in obedience to God before I see any sign of how He will bring the miracle. I have to do what I can do before God does what I can’t do.
What step do you need to take into the water?
Holy Spirit, please show me the steps I need to be taking right now to release Your miracle in my life. I ask for clarity and courage: clarity to know what to do and the courage to do it.
