Living a Consecrated Life
Then Joshua told the people, “Purify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.”
Joshua 3:5 NLT
God is getting ready to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land after forty years of wandering in the wilderness. The first step is to cross the Jordan River. Coming out of Egypt, they had to cross the Red Sea, and now they will see another miracle of crossing water.
God has told Joshua to be strong and courageous. Now God instructs the people to purify themselves to get prepared for the miracle. In another translation, the word used is “consecrate.”
Courage comes from living a consecrated life!
To purify, or consecrate, ourselves means to take certain steps that begin with reflection. We have to pause and look at our lives and see if there is anything in us that would not be pleasing to God. We must be honest with ourselves.
After reflection comes repentance. We choose to confess our sins to God and repent of the sin. That means we choose to turn away from sin and turn to God.
Then comes the receiving. We receive God’s forgiveness and freedom. We accept that through the blood of Jesus, we are forgiven and set free from the control of sin.
In our final step, we resolve. Now that we are free from the control and consequences of sin, we resolve to live a life that is pleasing to God. We resolve not to be slaves to sin.
I believe this is not a one-time event. It is more like a regular part of my faith journey. As I become more like Christ, there are more things revealed in my life that need adjustments. I need to take these steps regularly.
Holy Spirit, help me today to purify myself. Help me to be prepared for Your miracles in my life. You are wanting to work in and through me, so I open myself up to be a vessel You can work in and through.
