Learning to Trust and Obey

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Now the gates of Jericho were tightly shut because the people were afraid of the Israelites. No one was allowed to go out or in. But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors. You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the town.”

Joshua 6:1-5 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Has God ever given you a nudge of direction that seemed a bit ridiculous?

I can only imagine Joshua’s feelings when he felt God tell him the battle plan for Jericho. March around the wall for seven days, have the priests blow some trumpets, and then, on the thirteenth time around the wall, have everyone shout, and the walls will fall.

Joshua had spent 40 years preparing for this moment. From his first battle against the Amalekites, to learning how to experience the presence of God, to being a spy to check out the land, he had been in training for this moment. He had learned the secret of trusting and obeying. Regardless of what everyone else thought or did, Joshua would consistently decide to trust and obey God.

This time was no different. Trust God. Ask Him what they should do. And then, just obey what God says.

I know it is often hard to turn off our minds that want to help God out with a plan that makes better sense. We often try to manipulate people or circumstances to work out a strategy to get what we want how we want it. This strategy is not the way to real victory. Real victory is the result of learning to trust and obey God.

Is there any area of your life where you lack trust in God? Maybe you have that little voice that tells you God doesn’t like you, or God doesn’t want you to enjoy life, or God wants you to suffer because of your past choices and actions. That voice is a lie.

The truth is that God loves you. God created you with a plan and purpose. God has your best interest in mind. God’s plan is the best path for you. True joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment rest in knowing and doing the will of God. Listen to His voice of love and trust His plan.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, please help me to see God’s plan and purpose for my life. Help me to trust Your path and pace. Help me to learn to trust and obey in the big stuff and the little stuff.
