Moses was 120 years old when he died, yet his eyesight was clear, and he was as strong as ever. The people of Israel mourned for Moses on the plains of Moab for thirty days, until the customary period of mourning was over. Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him, doing just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Deuteronomy 34:7-9 NLT
Imagine following Moses as a leader. He’s the guy who faced down Pharaoh, led the children of Israel through the Red Sea, received the Ten Commandments from the hand of God on the mountain, and got the blueprints for the Tabernacle from God. Moses spent forty years leading Israel out of slavery, through the wilderness, and to the edge of the Promised Land. He was a legend in his time and is still studied five thousand years later for his leadership lessons.
And then there is Joshua. Chosen to fill the shoes of Moses. But Joshua was not going to do this alone. God had taken some of the same Spirit that was on Moses and put it into Joshua. God’s Spirit in Joshua was going to give him the wisdom and courage he would need to lead the nation after Moses.
