God Is With Us

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).

Isaiah 7:14 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Christmas is an amazing time of year. Along with the lights, trees, decorations, gifts, and pecan pie (Cindy makes a fantastic pie), there is the reminder that God keeps His promises.

In The Messiah in the Old Testament, Dr. Walter Kaiser identified 65 direct predictions of Jesus’ coming in the Old Testament. All of which were completely and accurately fulfilled in the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Many of these prophecies were written hundreds—if not thousands—of years before the birth of Jesus. Yet, the Holy Spirit spoke to men and gave them specific information about Jesus.

The Holy Spirit gave Isaiah the title that would identify Jesus as Immanuel. A title that would remind everyone Jesus was “God with Us.”

Matthew quoted Isaiah 7:14 in his account of the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:23). It seems that God wants us to know the coming of Jesus was actually God stepping out of heaven and wrapping Himself in human flesh.

This Christmas, we can rejoice that God is with us. In our hurt, pain, and confusion—God is with us. In our rushing from here to there—God is with us. In our brokenness, loneliness, and depression—God is with us. In our failures and our victories—God is with us.

Perhaps, we should schedule some time to pause and reflect on what it means that God is with us. He wants to be involved in our daily lives. God wants to help us. He wants to impart wisdom to us. He wants to give us hope and help. God is waiting for us to acknowledge that He is with us.

As a type-A personality, I tend to try to do things on my own. I like to plan my work and work my plan. I have had to train myself to push the pause button and ask for God’s help. Even in the little things, I am learning to pause and remember God is with me and wants to be involved in my life.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father God, thanks for being with me. Now, I pause to ask You to be Immanuel in my life today. Holy Spirit, please be my Teacher and Guide today.
