How to be Revived
The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: “I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.”
Isaiah 57:15 NLT
When we choose to fast and pray, we are set ourselves up for God to revive our lives. The keys to being revived are humility and repentance. There is no reviving without humility and repentance.
God hates pride. Spiritual pride is the worst kind. When we think we are spiritually more mature than others, we are full of spiritual pride.
While He was on earth, Jesus’ harshest words were for the Pharisees and religious leaders who considered themselves spiritually superior to others. He said they were like coffins—looking good on the outside but full of dead bones on the inside. That is pretty harsh.
One big step toward humility is repentance. Admitting I have sin in my life, asking God to forgive me of that sin, and choosing to walk away from that sin is repentance.
Repentance is not just feeling sorry for my sin. And it is not only admitting my sin. It is choosing to change through the power of the Holy Spirit. Inviting the Holy Spirit to transform and empower me to be able to change is vital. That is when we experience the reviving talked about in our passage.
As we humble ourselves and repent before God, we can then expect this revival to spread. Any revival always starts in the Church—with those who attend church and claim to be followers of Jesus. Unless we begin to humble ourselves and repent, we can’t expect the world to experience revival.
Holy Spirit, please show me areas of my life that need to change. Help me to see where I need to humble myself and repent before You. I want to be transformed and empowered to walk as a new creation in Christ.
