Love and Mercy
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT
“The faithful love of the Lord never ends!” That is worth thinking about for a moment. Regardless of what I have done, where I have been, or who I am, God loves me. His love never ends. I cannot do anything that will exhaust the love of God for me.
“His mercies never cease.” Not only does God continue to love me—He continues to pour mercy on me. One definition of mercy is “compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.” God definitely has the power and the right to punish me for my failures and sin. But His mercy offers me forgiveness.
Then comes the conclusion of our passage— “his mercies begin afresh each morning.” I wake up, and God has a new load of mercy to cover me today.
As I march into a new year, I choose to leave behind my failures, mistakes, sins, bad habits, hurts, and hang-ups. I choose to trust the mercy of God and start fresh. I choose to walk in victory over my past and receive the empowerment of forgiveness and mercy.
I’m convinced that a full understanding of God’s love and mercy does not motivate me to loose living but instead empowers me to live a holy life, a life that is free of regret, shame, bondage, and addiction. God gives love and mercy not so that I am free to sin—but so that I am free not to sin. I can live in the true freedom of righteousness.
Holy Spirit, help me to grasp the love God has for me and move forward in the freedom to be the person God created me to be. Help me to see myself as forgiven, free, and full of hope for my future.
