Our Heart's Desires
May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers.
Psalms 20:4-5 NLT
This is a psalm that is a prayer from King David over the children of Israel and over himself. He was praying that God would give them their “heart’s desires.” What are your heart’s desires?
One survey of 700 people asked them to pick one word to describe what they desired. The top ten responses in order of importance were: happiness, money, freedom, peace, joy, balance, fulfillment, confidence, stability, and passion.
The sad thing about the survey—most people responded that they felt their desires were unattainable.
Here is good news; God’s will is to bless us and fulfill our heart’s desires. God is okay with us asking to be blessed with all these things—even money.
Here is the key as we pray over our 21 days of prayer and fasting—we must be sure that our desires are in line with God’s desires.
We are told in Psalm 37:4, “Take delight in the Lord and he will give you your heart’s desires.”
There are two parts of this passage—we “delight in the Lord.” First, we must make God’s will the priority of our lives. We must yield our desires to His desires. We must begin by asking God to give us the desires He wants us to have. We can’t have selfish desires that are motivated by greed or self-promotion. We must ask God to give us His desires for our life.
Then, we can pray for those desires to be filled because we know they are in line with God’s will. God will fulfill every God-given desire. He will pour out blessings beyond our imagination. He will answer all our prayers.
What is God’s desire for your circumstance? For your marriage? For your children? For your future? For your job? For your health? For your education? For your finances?
Once we have a revelation of God’s desires, we can begin to pray with boldness.
Holy Spirit, I yield my desires to God’s desires. I want to see Your kingdom come in my life. I want to know what God’s will is for every area of my life. Help my prayers to always be in line with You.
