Leave or Believe?
At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?” Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.”
John 6:66-69 NLT
There are times when people can’t handle the hard teachings of Jesus because they go against our selfish flesh, or conflict with our preconceived ideas. Jesus has been teaching in John, chapter six, about being the Bread of Life. The people were confused because they saw Jesus as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. Yet, Jesus claimed to be the Bread of Life that came down from heaven. Jesus claimed He was one with God.
Jesus also claimed that only by believing in Him can someone find eternal life. The Jews were taught eternal life was found only by obeying the law. Our actions are what make us right with God. Jesus said that it is impossible to be made right with God through human effort. Faith in Jesus is the only hope we have.
This teaching caused many people to walk away. Jesus turned to the twelve disciples and asked if they would leave also. Peter answered, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.”
Peter could have some really great moments. This moment was one of them. He recognized Jesus had the “words that give eternal life.”
The Word of God is what gives eternal life. When we open ourselves to God’s Word, we are ingesting eternal life. Jesus was the living word while He walked on earth. After Jesus left, the Holy Spirit inspired men to write down the written word of God—the Bible. Today, we have the written word of God that releases eternal life—the life of God—into anyone willing to read it and believe it.
Daily, I practice reading and meditating on the written Word of God because I need God’s life flowing in me daily. Without God’s life flowing in me, I am in trouble.
Holy Spirit, help me to daily ingest Your written Word as I see Your life released in me.
