Light Overcomes Darkness
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
John 1:4-5 NLT
John has a theme of Jesus being the light of the world. (A claim that Jesus made about Himself in John 8:12.) In the opening verses of his gospel, John lets us know that Jesus came into the world, and through the life of God in Himself, He brought “light to everyone.”
We understand that light is necessary for life. We need air, water, and light for anything to grow—except perhaps mold that seems to grow in darkness. Perhaps that is a sermon itself—do you want mold to grow in your life? Just stay in the darkness and mold is the only thing that will grow.
John tells us that darkness could never “extinguish” the light. I have never opened the door of my home at night and had the darkness outside invade my home. The opposite is always true. The light on the inside invades the darkness on the outside. It is impossible for darkness to overcome the light.
That is the way it is for us when the light of Jesus is living inside of us. His light is constantly invading the darkness around us. He is constantly wanting to shine His light through us to impact a world living in darkness. He wants to shine through us as an extension of His light.
Don’t be afraid of the darkness. Just be sure to keep allowing the Holy Spirit to fuel the light of Jesus in you.
Holy Spirit, I ask You today to reignite the light of Jesus in my life. Make that light bigger and bigger with each day.
