Encountering the Light
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”
“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”
John 9:1-5 NLT
In the previous chapter, Jesus had declared while standing in the Treasury Court of the Temple, “I Am the light of the world.” Jesus had connected Himself with God as the infinite “I Am” and given a metaphor to express His mission and character. Jesus is the light that has come into a dark world. This light has the power to deal with our formless and empty existence just as the creative light of God did at creation in Genesis 1.
Jesus now illustrates what it means to be the light of the world in John, chapter nine when He and His disciples encounter a man who was born blind. The disciples ask if the man was in this condition because of his sins or the sins of his parents. Their limited theology taught them that bad things only happen to bad people, so someone sinned.
Jesus corrected the bad theology by telling them neither had sinned, but this was for the glory of God. Then Jesus repeats His claim to be the light of the world.
If you read the rest of the story, you will discover Jesus made mud, put it on the man’s eyes, and told him to go wash it off. When the man obeyed Jesus, he received his sight. Suddenly, the light was brought into his dark world because he encountered Jesus and obeyed.
The same thing can happen today when we choose to simply encounter and obey Jesus. When we open our lives to the light of Jesus, He will show us the changes that need to be made and empower us to partner with the Holy Spirit to make those changes. Regardless of how dark our darkness is, the light of Jesus will dispel the darkness.
Holy Spirit, I want the light of Jesus ruling in my life. I want to live in the light. Daily, let the light of Jesus shine on me.
