“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:14-16 NLT
We have been studying about Jesus being the light of the world. Yesterday, we read in John 9:5 where Jesus declared the second time, “I Am the light of the world.” This statement preceded the miracle of the healing of the man born blind.
When Jesus made that statement in John 9:5, He preceded it with the phrase, “while I am in the world.” Jesus knew that He was going to die for the sins of the world, rise again on the third day, and then ascend back to heaven. While He was in the world, He would be the light of the world, but when He left, His followers would have the task of being the light in the world.
Our task is to reflect the light of Jesus to a world living in darkness. We are like the moon in our universe. The moon has no inherit source of light—it only reflects the light of the sun.
We have no inherit light of our own. We only reflect the light of the Son. We have to be careful that the world doesn’t get between us and the Son—when we allow the world to get in the way, it will block our ability to reflect God’s light to our world.
I want to be a full moon. I want to be reflecting the light of Jesus to people in my world who are hurting and in need. If my world is dark, perhaps, it is because I’m not reflecting good light.
Holy Spirit, help me to remove anything in my life that is blocking the light of Jesus. Help me to shine into the darkest places and let people know there is light for them.
