Looking in the Wrong Places

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him. They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”

They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”

Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”

John 6:24-29 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Jesus had just fed five thousand men plus women and children with five loaves and two fish. Then He sent His disciples away to go to the other side of the lake. Later, Jesus walked on the water to His disciples. The next day, the people who ate the free buffet were disappointed Jesus was gone and went looking for Him. They found Jesus in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Jesus pointed out the people were seeking Him for the wrong reason. They wanted to get the free food instead of believing in Jesus as the Messiah, Son of God, and Lord.

Jesus told them, “don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food.”

We could argue that food is an important thing to be concerned about. Without food, we can’t last more than about thirty days. But Jesus was using food as a metaphor for the wrong things that people spend their energy to achieve.

People often find themselves looking for satisfaction and fulfillment in all the wrong places. We want love, and we bounce from one relationship to another with no commitment. We want intimacy but turn to pornography or meaningless relationships to fulfill a physical urge. We want to escape the struggles of life but turn to drugs or alcohol. The grand scheme of things is that we are looking for something to make us feel good and valuable, yet we look in all the wrong places.

Jesus says to spend your time seeking eternal life. There is more to life than what you see, feel, taste, hear, or smell. There is another dimension that speaks to the real needs in our life. That hole in our heart can’t be filled with trophies, toys, titles, or earthly treasures. We must have something that did not originate in this world.

This hole in our hearts is why we need the living bread of life that came down from heaven. Our Father God, the One Who created us, has sent us a gift in the person of Jesus to fulfill every longing of our life. When we begin to believe in Jesus and invite Him into our lives, amazing things begin to happen.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I want You in control of my life. I want You to work in me and through me. I believe that You are the Son of God, Savior of the world, and Lord.
