The Right Diet
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
Romans 8:5-6 NLT
The battle for peace begins in the mind. If our mind is controlled by our sinful nature, death is released in us. But if our mind is controlled by the Spirit, we release life and peace.
How can we be sure our mind is being controlled by the Spirit?
What we feed our minds determines what controls our minds. If we feed our minds a constant diet of bad news, our peace will disappear. But when we feed our minds a consistent diet of God’s Word and spend time with God’s Spirit in prayer, then our minds are controlled by the Spirit.
When facing stress and anxiety, I would encourage reading Psalm 23 to remind ourselves that God is our Shepherd and He is providing what we need. I also memorize scriptures that I can quote to myself when anxiety tries to come into my life.
Recently, I’ve been quoting 2 Timothy 1:7– “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
We have to feed our minds a steady diet of God’s Word if we want our minds to be controlled by the Spirit.
Holy Spirit, I ask that You guide me to the promises of Your Word that will help me feed my mind the right stuff. Help me to live in peace because my mind is controlled by the Spirit and not by the sinful flesh.
