But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love. And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.
Jude 1:20-23 NLT
Being a follower of Jesus Christ means that we serve others and live our lives in community with others. There is no such thing as a lone Christian. We live out Christianity in our community through authentic relationships. We need each other because God created us for community with others.
The problem that many people face is they don’t know how to really be a friend. Today’s scripture gives us suggestions—build each other up, pray, show mercy to the person while hating any sin. It is worth thinking about those things.
I read an anonymous quote recently, “I went out to find a friend, but could find none there. I went out to be a friend, and I found friends everywhere.”
It’s not about finding a friend; it’s about being a friend and learning to love and serve others. Through our loving and serving others, we suddenly discover we have many friends.
Friendships are crucial to winning any war. Strategic alliances are essential in warfare between nations. The same is true in our spiritual battles. We need alliances with others who are praying for us and lifting us up in our times of need.
Holy Spirit, please help me to be a friend. Help me to learn how to love and serve others. Help my life to be marked by service.
