Invest in the Next Generation
The people of Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him—those who had personally experienced all that the Lord had done for Israel.
Joshua 24:31 NLT
Here we have a beautiful statement that is also filled with a bit of foreshadowing of the future. It is great to read that during the lifetime of Joshua, the people served the Lord. This is obvious evidence of Joshua’s strong example and leadership. His life impacted not only his family but also the nation as a whole. Even the elders who served Joshua continued to lead the people to serve the Lord.
But the sad part of the story is the untold part. We don’t get the fullness of the story until we turn the pages of the Bible to the book of Judges. Here we learn that after Joshua dies, there arises another generation who did not know the Lord or the miracles He had done.
Regardless of the miracles, we have experienced that the Church is always one generation away from extinction. Each generation needs to experience its own miracles. They need those memories of a personal encounter with God. They can’t live off of our stories; they need their own.
The one mistake Joshua made was that he didn’t have a Joshua to follow him. He didn’t raise up someone to continue to lead the nation into full commitment to God.
May we not make that mistake. May we constantly be looking for those men and women in whom we can invest our stories and help them develop their own stories.
Holy Spirit, please show me those around me I need to invest in today.
