Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.”
Mark 8:34-35 NLT
In the kingdom of God, we win by losing!
When we choose to love our lives, we actually discover we have saved our lives. Our lives are made new and enriched when we give up our desires and wants for the sake of Jesus.
We live in a society that is the total opposite of this concept. This selfie generation makes it all about us—how we look, how much fun we are having, and everything we have.
The kingdom of God is not about looking good, having fun, or owning a lot of stuff. God’s kingdom is about laying down our lives for others. Serving, not being served.
It is hard to understand how dying to self is actually the road to true life. When I say no to my flesh, I can say a big YES to real life.
We are wired by God to only find true fulfillment, joy, and satisfaction through giving, not through getting.
Holy Spirit, show me today how I can give to someone else. Show me how to lay down my life for others.
