Your Own Cross
And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:27 NLT
As I read this passage today, the words “your own cross” jumped out at me. The Spirit seems to be saying to me that each of us has our unique, personal cross that we must pick up daily.
My background, experiences, and struggles are unique to me. No other human on earth has my exact combination. There may be similarities, but we are all unique. Therefore, our cross is unique.
The cross is a place of dying and surrender. Jesus gave up His will for an easier way out and surrendered to the pain, humiliation, rejection, and suffering of the cross. Only through the cross could Jesus discover the victory of the resurrection. You can’t have a resurrection without a cross.
So many times, we want to be victorious without paying the price. If you’re going to ride the Merry-Go-Round, you have to pay for the ticket.
As followers of Christ, we want to live in resurrection victory. But we can’t live in resurrection victory if we don’t pick up our cross. Picking up our cross is dying to our selfishness, pride, addictions, habits, hurts, and hang-ups.
Holy Spirit, please help me today to recognize those areas of my life where I need to die. I want to live victoriously. Help me to remember death proceeds resurrection.
