Deity and Humanity
“The Father and I are one.” Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?” They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.””
John 10:30-33 NLT
This statement is a powerful claim that Jesus made. He claimed to be equal with God. He is the only person whose conception had no relationship to His origin, yet He was not a man before His incarnation. By virtue of His birth as a man, Jesus Christ is now both Son of God and Man – deity and humanity.
The people of His day could not grasp how the man standing in front of them could be God. That belief was blasphemy to them.
Many people today struggle with that same concept. They can accept Jesus as a good teacher, perhaps even as a miracle worker, but they struggle to see Jesus as God. It is only by accepting Jesus as God that we discover the truth. Jesus is both God and man—fully God and fully man.
As a man, Jesus lived a life without sin and died on a cross to pay the price for our sins. His death opened the way for all humanity to have a relationship with God.
If we want to know God, we can study the life of Jesus.
Thank You, Jesus, for laying aside your deity to become flesh for me. Thanks for dying for my sins. Thanks for living as my resurrected Lord and Savior.
