Living on Empty
Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:35 NLT
How would you like never to be hungry again? Never be thirsty again?
Obviously, Jesus is not talking about physical hunger or thirst in our passage today. Jesus is referring to the hunger and thirst deep down in our souls.
Every human being has an emptiness inside that has to be filled with something or someone. Often people spend their entire lives trying to fill that emptiness with the wrong things. There are a lot of options—success, money, toys, alcohol, drugs, pornography, and promiscuous lifestyles, just to name a few.
The problem with all of these, and more, is that they can only give a short-term fix. In a brief moment, we have to have more to keep from feeling empty on the inside. Some of the things that promise to fill the emptiness only make the void bigger.
The only way to fill the void in our soul is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. There is no plan B. No other option. Everything else is a myth that promises what it can’t provide.
God, Who created us, designed us to function at our best level only when we have Him as the center of our lives. Any other way of living is living on empty.
We have an entire society today that is living on empty. Every day is a struggle to find something to make it worth getting out of bed.
Lord Jesus, I am so thankful that You are my bread of life. I thank You for coming to earth, dying on the cross, and coming alive again to prove that You are the Son of God. You are Lord. You are the Savior of the world.
