On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said, “Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies. Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the Lord answered such a prayer. Surely the Lord fought for Israel that day!
Joshua 10:12-14 NLT
What can God do? What can’t God do?
There are a wide variety of scholars who have attempted to give a logical explanation of the sun standing still so that Joshua could defeat the Amorites. Some claim this is just poetic wording to explain that in the heat of battle, the day seemed longer than normal. Others try to give some explanation of clouds on the horizon that reflected the sun to give the appearance of longer light. Others talk about a supposed NASA study that found a missing day (this appeared in the 1980s and has been proven false).
The question really boils down to: Do we believe the God Who created the universe with the words, “Let there be light,” has the power to stop the rotation of the earth? Do we believe the God Who restored life to Jesus after three days in a tomb could do this?
Is there anything too hard for our God?
Perhaps, instead of attempting to explain the miracle, we just accept the miracle and move on. Let’s take the Bible for what it says. Joshua wanted to complete the battle against a tough foe and asked God for a miracle, and God responded with a miracle.
Do we have to know how that miracle occurred? Are we capable of understanding the how and why of God’s works?
I suggest we just learn to trust and obey God. Trust that He is God, and He can do whatever He wants, whenever He wants, however He wants. Let’s trust God.
Holy Spirit, I want to trust You. Help me to not allow my human mind to limit Your ability. Help me to learn to trust and obey even when I don’t fully understand.
