Pause and Remember

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“When you crossed the Jordan River and came to Jericho, the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I gave you victory over them. And I sent terror ahead of you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory. I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them.”

Joshua 24:11-13 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Joshua has completed his part of the work in conquering the Promised Land. He is now old and about to pass on. He calls the leaders and people together to make one last speech. He recounts the victories of the nation from leaving Egypt to entering and conquering the land.

I love this part of the speech where Joshua speaks on behalf of God to remind the people their victory came from God. “It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory.”

We need to be reminded we aren’t as good as we sometimes think. It is God’s strength and mercy that has provided for us and brought victory.

We also need to remember everything we have has come from the hand of God. I try to daily remind myself the food I eat, the clothes I wear, the truck I drive, and the home I live in all have come from God. He has been gracious to me. Even though I have worked hard, it is not my talents that have gotten these—God has worked on my behalf and blessed me.

Everything I have and all the good I have done is from the favor of God in my life. We need to give God thanks and credit for His favor regularly.

A few days back, I sat in silence one day and reflected on moments in my life where God really spared me from myself. I thought back on some unwise choices that could have gone really bad, but God, in His mercy, protected me from going down a path that could have been harmful to me and others.

I am definitely a living testimony to God’s grace. I trust that you can think of moments when God worked on your behalf. How about pausing a moment to say thanks for God’s work in your life?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the blessings and favor You have poured into my life. Thanks for the times You protected me from me. Thanks for the times You gave me more than I deserved.
