Prepare the Way
Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him! The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth. And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.’”
Luke 3:4-6 NLT
John the Baptist has a unique role as the one to prepare the way for the Messiah. Luke lets us know that John was the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, given hundreds of years earlier.
John’s message was that the Messiah would fill the valleys, level the mountains, straighten the curves, and make smooth the rough places. That is worth thinking about for a moment.
Valleys always represent the low places of life—places of discouragement, confusion, and frustration. Jesus has come to fill up these seasons of life.
Mountains represent the difficult times that require hard work. Jesus has come to work along with us and strengthen us as we labor to find victory.
The curves are the turns of life. When we think we have a plan, suddenly, we get hit with a curve. The unexpected happens, and we feel lost. Jesus comes to be our Guide through the twist and turns of life.
The rough places could represent those times of temptation where we struggle. Jesus has come to give us the empowerment to overcome the temptations of life.
As we approach this Christmas season, let’s welcome Jesus into our world. Let’s invite Him to walk with us through this moment of our lives. Let’s lean into His strength and realize He is God’s gift of love for those of us who are struggling today.
Holy Spirit, I need the help of Jesus today. I open my heart to receive His life. Help me to lean into Your presence today.
