Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.”
Daniel 10:12 NLT
I have kept a personal prayer list for over 30 years. Each year, I transfer certain issues to my new list. Some people have remained on my prayer list for all 30 years—they have not yet made a decision to become followers of Jesus.
I have other issues that I pray about daily. Right now, I have been praying hard for my nation with its division, injustice, systemic racism, generational poverty, educational inequality, abortion, human trafficking, and political corruption.
I don’t understand why some prayers get an almost immediate answer, and others seem to take years. But I take comfort in the story of Daniel. Daniel was taken from his homeland as a teenager – a victim of war. He is given a new name and trained in a new country. Yet, Daniel maintained a daily pattern of praying three times a day—in the good and bad times, he kept praying.
As a result of Daniel’s faithful praying, God gave him visions of the future. Sometimes, these visions were confusing. But Daniel continued to pray for the understanding of the visions. After 21 days of fasting, Daniel had an angel come to visit him with an understanding of the vision. Daniel’s perseverance paid off.
William Thrasher said, “Perseverance in prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance but rather laying hold of God’s willingness. Our sovereign God has purposed to sometimes require persevering prayer as the means to accomplish His will.”
There seems to be a spiritual principle of perseverance. Special revelation and victory are available to those who refuse to give up.
Holy Spirit, please help me to persevere in my prayers. Help me to stay strong and faithful until the victory comes.
