Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
Romans 8:35-37 NLT
God has never promised we would not have problems. He did not promise a trouble-free life. Our righteousness, self-discipline, fasting, prayer, Bible reading, church attendance, or giving does not insulate us from the difficulties of life. Bad things happen.
When the war is raging, we need to be sure we have the shield of faith to protect us. Faith is the ability to see things the way God sees them. Our problem is that we often focus on the problem and not the Problem Solver.
Paul certainly understood problems. His life was full of beatings, shipwrecks, being stoned, and being imprisoned. More than once, Paul almost lost his life for the sake of the gospel. Yet, Paul declared, “despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ.”
“Overwhelming victory is ours through Christ.” That is where our focus must be. We must focus on God’s love for us expressed through the Lord Jesus. This focus will keep our shield of faith strong and in place. A shield that can stop all the fiery darts of the enemy.
Holy Spirit, help me today to shift my focus from my problems to the Problem Solver. Help me to see the reward You have waiting for me when the battle is over.
